Shiny, happy fundraising at Fanshawe College

Dig deep into your pockets because the largest student run fundraiser in Canada is set to sweep across over fifty college and university campuses.

The Shinerama campaign, which raises money and awareness for The Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will be launched at Fanshawe College on Friday, September 9th and continued into the city the following day.

“Our goal is to raise more awareness on campus and in the community about Cystic Fibrosis,” said Christine Thomson, the Fanshawe Shinerama Director and Fanshawe Student Union VP Internal.

The entire mission relies on the generosity of the community and the support of student volunteers, which is just as important. Over 35,000 post-secondary student volunteers from British Columbia to Newfoundland shine shoes, wash cars or even dance for donations on behalf of the foundation.

“Our donation totals heavily rely on the number of volunteers that come out,” Thomson said.

Not only is Shinerama a great way to meet new people, but volunteers are also showered with prizes and free gift bags. Top raffle prizes include $500 towards tuition, a trip for two from Breakaway Tours and gift certificates to the campus bookstore, Chapters and Bootlegger.

Every volunteer will get a gift bag that includes $10 gift certificate to All Maple Apparel and $50 towards a trip from Breakaway Tours, not to mention a ton of other goodies.

To volunteer, meet at the Oasis in the FSU building at 9am on Saturday, September 10 and bring your bus pass, frosh shirt (if you have one) and some friends.

The day will start with a complimentary Tim Hortons breakfast and then volunteers will be bussed out to various locations to “shine.” Lunch will be supplied by Chartwells Mr. Sub and delivered to the various locations.

Other Shinerama fundraising initiatives include a move-in day BBQ, Shinerama Pub and bar blitz to sell candy for donations. There will also be two car washes at the Zeller's on Highbury and the Mac's on Trafalgar, between 10am and 3pm. All of the proceeds go towards the foundation, which supports research and treatment for the one in every 2,500 children born with Cystic Fibrosis in Canada.

Fanshawe students have raised $32,000 for Shinerama since 1999, and Thomson hopes to raise the bar this year by raising $10,000 and attracting 200 volunteers. Another goal for Fanshawe Shinerama is to raise awareness through competition, by giving Western a run for their money.

“We want to beat Western's percentage in fundraising,” Thompson said. “There is nothing wrong with a little friendly competition.”
