Movie Fun: Slipknot disappoint fans with artistic documentary

Slipknot — Voliminal: Inside the Nine

When I first heard that this DVD was a compelling inside look at the members of Slipknot and their time on the road, not to mention the boys being themselves and not using the masks, I was so pumped to get this baby. Luckily for me, my buds picked it up for me for my Birthday (thanks, Cots and Dopey!) and after watching it, no offense to my buds, I'm glad that I didn't pay for it.

This whole “documentary” was filmed and edited by band percussionist, Clown. I don't care if he wanted to make this artsy or have a certain vision for this but man, we're metal fans and don't want to watch random pictures or images just because you think it makes your home video “different.”

Once I sat through the boring “life on the road” section (where they STILL blurred out the guys' faces), I put in the second DVD awaiting the individual candid interviews and was actually amazed at all the different personalities that are in this band. This part of the DVD set (which isn't actually that long), was at least a good watch but I'm not sure how many times I'd go back just to watch each member talk for about five to 10 minutes.

The other extras in this package include the videos for “Duality,” “Vermillion,” “Vermillion Pt. 2,” and “Before I Forget.”Additional goodness comes in the form of 10 newly filmed live tracks.

Before you watch this DVD (if you do after reading this), take one look at the packaging, the inside booklet and try to navigate the menus to actually get to the “documentary,” and you'll know EXACTLY the mess you're in for.

The live bonus tracks really don't make this a must buy because if you want an excellent Slipknot DVD, go out and spend the money on “Disasterpieces” instead and perhaps pick up the double live CD that they released a year ago.

I really thank my buds for picking this up, but I'm just so disappointed with this release that I really can't suggest it for anyone, even die-hard fans (and I've been following this band before their first disc came out). This one is a definite pass.
