Nirvana back on DVD

Hurray! Someone finally emailed me and asked an “American Idol” question. Jennifer emailed and asked if I thought that the guys had any chance against the women in this year's competition. I have very serious doubts that any of the male singers can hold a candle to the women this year. Melinda Doolittle is my pick as the winner this year, but Lakisha Jones will be able to give her a run for her money. If those girls are taken out of their R&B element, though, it may be a slightly different outcome. Fox will keep me watching, although it's no “Rockstar” or metal show. Speaking of metal...

Dying Fetus - War of Attrition

If you've heard any Dying Fetus album before, you're not going to find much different on this release…but that's not a bad thing. Four years after Stop At Nothing, Dying Fetus has returned to make the point that they are still an important part and contributor to the American death metal scene.

The dual vocals (especially the low end growls, which sound like orcas grumbling at some points) are one of my favourite things about Dying Fetus and although you don't know the words first hand, it makes you want to growl along. The blast beats mixed in with the frantic start and stop again guitar licks are as slick as ever, and once you hear the Dying Fetus style, you'll question why some other death metal bands even try to compete.

If you loved the wicked Destroy the Opposition from this band, you'll love this disc. Even if you don't love death metal, you have to pick this up for your CD collection just to say that you have a disc from a band called Dying Fetus.

Nirvana - “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!”

I finally got around to picking up this DVD from one of the bands that affected me in my high school days in the early 90s (yes, I'm that old). I bought this release when it first came out on VHS, but I lent it to someone, forgot who and never saw it again but it was still nice to go back to classic performances and interviews from this band.

The audio is now in 5.1 digital and the disc includes extra songs that were previously unreleased. Some of the performances aren't really good, but Nirvana just wanted to rock and it's great to watch them in their prime. If you haven't seen it, pick it up.
