Fanshawe alumni offer students the advantage through Mentor for Success program

Whether you're graduating at the end of the school year or just beginning your academic career, saddling up to a mentor may give you that edge on what lies beyond the gates of graduation.

Fanshawe's Alumni Association has implemented Mentoring for Success, a program designed to match motivated students with successful alumni to create a valuable, two-way learning relationship.

Jen Denys, Mentoring for Success Coordinator, said the program is a great opportunity for students to build their resumes, network and explore different directions in their field of study.

“It's a great way to kick-start your career and motivate you to get going,” said Denys.

Students who sign-up for the program will be interviewed and matched with professionals in either the mentee's field of study or a similar discipline.

Mentoring for Success will have a booth set up at the Volunteer Fair in Forwell Hall on Wednesday, October 12, where both prospective students and mentors can ask questions or sign up for the program.

The mentors, who must be a Fanshawe graduate and have at least five years of career experience in their field of study, will have the chance to develop their leadership skills while keeping their finger on the pulse of current events in their specialty.

David Wyatt, President of the Alumni Association, said he became a mentor because he had several helpful informal mentors throughout his career.

“It's an opportunity for me to share what I've done right, but more importantly, what I've done wrong,” said Wyatt, who graduated from Fanshawe's Motive Power Technician program in 1980 and is now a managing partner at Middlesex Appliance. Last year Wyatt was paired with a student who was interested in running his own business and the two meet regularly to discuss the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

The program recommends two to four hours of communication between mentor and mentee a month, which could be either by phone, email or in person.

Although last year a pilot-mentoring project was available for students, the 2005/06 school year is the first that Alumni Association has ran Mentoring for Success.
