Fanshawe student volunteers shine for cash

Nickels, dimes, loonies, toonies and even Canadian Tire money was donated last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while Fanshawe student volunteers collected on behalf of Shinerama in the halls and around town.

The fundraising started Thursday night in the Out Back Shack at the Shinerama Pub. While students celebrated the first week of school, Shinerama and Fanshawe's street team was in full-force, collecting money by selling candies and selling raffle tickets. Tickets for the pub were $3 in advance or $5 at the door, with all proceeds going to the cause.

“The Pub went great,” said FSU VP Finance Chris Pressey, who spearheaded the Shinerama campaign this year. “We raised a lot of additional funds, especially through the raffle tickets.”

Early Friday, September 8, Fanshawe's Hospitality Division was out collecting donations on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation throughout campus. The John Labatt Centre provided a BBQ lunch in the SUB Courtyard for donations, which Pressey said went over really well, especially since a BAND played on the stage.

FSU VPs took the plunge in the dunk tank that was also in the SUB courtyard in the afternoon. Volunteers also scrubbed cars outside K Building for donations.

“I am very appreciative of all the volunteers throughout the entire Shinerama process,” said Pressey, who was protected by water wings when it was his turn to be target practice for the dunk tank.

On Saturday, September 9 enthusiastic Fanshawe volunteers turned out to raise funds around London. Students were set up outside Argyle Mall, Zellers at Northland Mall, Mac's on Oxford Street and Colver Auto Garage, where students shined cars for cash donations.

Pressey estimated each Fanshawe volunteer raised an average of $100 during the day, which far surpasses the national Shinerama average of $35 per canvasser.

London is no stranger to Shine Day in the city, as both Western and Fanshawe have been participating in the fundraiser for years.

Pressey would like to thank all corporate sponsors who helped throughout the campaign; JLC, Clintar, Coca-Cola, The Roxbury, Winks, HBC, Rogers, Mac's and Breakaway Tours.

The raffle tickets for $500 tuition was drawn last Tuesday and the winner was Cassie Hockert.
