Fanshawe student fights her way to the top

Watch out Fanshawe College, there is a woman roaming the halls that could beat up just about anyone that got in her way.

Julia Campbell, a first year General Studies major, former Athletic Assistant with Fanshawe Athletics, and mother of two, has recently been selected to Canada's National Karate team.

Fighting for the Grand Bend Karate club, Campbell qualified at a London tournament to enter herself into a National tournament this past summer in Quebec.

“I finished third in continuous sparring, and fourth in points sparring,” said Campbell. “This qualified me with a spot on the national team.”

With Karate not being her first passion, Campbell was always interested in kickboxing and was an active participant in baseball, volleyball, and ball hockey. However when she was introduced to Karate she realized it was something she enjoyed very much.

“I fell in love with it, and never looked back,” Campbell said.

Not being a mainstream sport, individuals involved with karate tend to develop a close bond with each other, and a general respect for each other as well.

“The karate culture is a very close knit group,” said Campbell. “We have the same life principles in general, are all very physically fit, and have a general appreciation for what the others do.”

A very physically demanding sport, the highest possible level in karate is receiving your black belt. This is something Campbell will be receiving in November.

“There will be a formal presentation by my Sensei in November officially giving me my black belt,” Campbell said. She will be given the distinction of the senior student in the class and will be able to grade other students in the class.

Campbell hopes to get into the Health and Fitness program at Fanshawe College, and someday work for the Canadian Army, helping to keep the troops in shape and entertained by organizing different activities and sporting events.
