Taking fashion to the streets and online

Creator of the famous blog site The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman, has devoted his popular website to photographs of everyday people on the street who have a good fashion sense, a.k.a. ‘street style.'

Schuman went to college (in his hometown) at Indiana University, and graduated with a major in Apparel Merchandising, with a minor in Costume Construction. Although he has worked in the fashion industry for 15 years, the fashion guru first started out in sales and marketing for designer collections. He has worked for designers such as Onward Kashiyama, Valentino, and has represented designers like Helmut Lang and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Schuman has worked on fashion shows and has even opened his own showroom.

After 9/11 his career shifted into the realm of photography, a passion of his along with fashion. This career move has led him to a successful career he never thought he would have. Schuman now has a monthly page in GQ, as well as a contributing guest blog and videos for Style.com.

I first herd of Schuman while watching Fashion Television. They featured him in one of their episodes, and I immediately went on his blog site. I was totally blown away with all the photographs and the people he featured. They have such style and everyone looked great, just like a photo shoot. A good photographer can make anyone look good and Schuman definitely does that.

The Sartorialist includes archives dating back to September 2005, to see how style has evolved over the past couple of years, to present date with lots of updates. The website also includes videos, along with guest blogs and a spot for anyone to post a comment under a photo. The videos are fun to watch because they could be of anyone who has a great sense of style and trends. The style-conscious streeters are usually caught on the street of New York, Paris and Milan, and the majority work in fashion or art in some way.

Schuman writes a simple detailed commentary of each photo taken. His work has inspired designers, and it is commonly known that all the best designers get their inspiration from the street. I think it would be really cool to set up something like that at Fanshawe. To take photos of people dressed in unique ways. Wearing heels and a fancy top does not necessary make you stylish, it is how you pair clothing and project your unique personality. It would be a smart plan to team up with someone in photography and work together to write about the featured stylish person. I hope that will happen sooner or later, but I understand every student's busy schedule.

Schuman is inspiring for all students because he became successful for doing what he loves and started from something so simple and worked his way up. I encourage you to check out his blog, go to: http://www.thesartorialist.blogspot.com/
