London Police are on the move

London Police Services have announced that a mobile command unit will be deployed in the Fanshawe area this spring.

LPS announced on November 26 that instead of a satellite station in the vicinity of the college, they were instead going to utilize the command unit to increase the police presence in the area.

“We've used it many times when there's a need for police presence,” said LPS Deputy Chief Brad Duncan. “It provides us with a mobile office situation, so we can deploy our officers from there, they have the opportunity to stay out for a longer length of time because they have somewhere they can go. Our intention in the spring is to use it in that fashion in that area, and other areas to be honest, where we may have the need.”

“The chief did commit to providing that command centre in that area if it's needed,” explained Duncan. “Because the effectiveness of that is that we can move it as required, by definition it's something that we will put in, and pull out as required.”

The mobile command unit has already been used in the Fanshawe area - students living on or near Fleming Dr. may have already seen it in the weeks following the highly publicized stabbings that took place in the area.

“I think it's a solution,” said Travis Mazereeuw, the Fanshawe Student Union President. “It's not necessarily a bad thing to have mobile units here if they feel that it's needed. I just think that the students need to party responsibly and if they aren't partying responsibly they need to be prepared to face the consequences of the London Police.

“As long as the police are respecting their boundaries and not over-reacting to students - if they're treating everyone fairly I don't have an issue, and I don't think the students can either.”
