Decorating for a good cause

Fanshawe's interior design students are putting their artistic touches on a collection of Christmas trees in the hopes of raising funds for Habitat for Humanity this holiday season.

The trees, three-foot spruces donated to the design students by the horticulture technicians program, will all be decorated to represent a unique theme, and then auctioned off in a silent-bid fashion.

“Each tree has a string of clear lights,” said Chris Rose, a second year interior design student who is taking part in the auction. “So that portion of the tree was the same for everybody. Then we were given a theme that was representative of a business downtown-and that's how we would decorate our tree.”

The themes, which range from furry and fun, to beach and bistro, will give each tree it's own unique personality, especially considering that the majority of the ornaments are handmade by the students themselves.

“The 14 trees will all have a starting bid of $25, which will go towards refunding the horticultural department for the trees,” explained Rose. “But anything made on top of that will go directly to Habitat for Humanity.”

The trees will be on show in H Gallery, where interested parties will also be able to bid, until December 6 at noon. The auction is open to the general public.
