College loses ‘selfless' student

Fanshawe is saddened at the loss of one of it's own students and part of the college community in late November.

William Nicholas (Nick) Hart, a third-year environmental technology student, passed away on November 24. Hart, 28, was described as an outgoing and helpful student who was never able to turn down a person in need.

“He is one of the best people I've known,” said Peter Schnurr, one of Hart's friends and a fellow Fanshawe student. “I remember he was downtown once and ended up talking to this homeless guy, so Nick went over to [buy] him a hot dog. As he's there, two drunk guys came over and started harassing the hot dog lady. Nick told them to get lost, so they started fighting him two-on-one. It came down to one guy had Nick in a headlock and was choking him, and Nick ended up ‘tapping-out' on the side of the street.

“So we always joked about this, I mean who the hell taps out of a street fight? But it really explained what kind of a person he was, always looking out for people.”

Hart also volunteered as a peer tutor and spent time working with a minor league hockey team. Donations can be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation in his name.
