Student designs fire ad

As part of Fanshawe's third-year graphic design program, students took part in a design competition for the London Fire Department.

Anthony Green, whose design was chosen by the LFD, received not only $1,000 in prize money, but his ‘Did you forget anything?” campaign will be used by the department as part of this years fire awareness campaign.

“I wanted to focus on creating a sense of paranoia,” Green said. “When the person sees this ad, to get them thinking did they leave anything running that could cause a fire? Hopefully, next time before leaving [they'll] double check and make sure everything is turned off otherwise when they get home their house might not be there. That's what I was really aiming for.”

Green's design was based on simplicity with the headline reading “Did you forget anything?” followed by a checklist which includes “turned off oven or stove” and “unplugged iron” amongst others. The text is set on a black background with a stream of smoke drifting upwards in the background.

And the prize money?

“That money's gone, but it went to a good cause,” Green explained. “I went ahead and ordered a new Macintosh computer for the next semester of school.”
