Rookies feel the need for speed

Losing some key post players, the Falcons will rely on quickness to outrun their opponents.

The Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team is geared for another season with head coach Lori Mackay at the helm. The Falcons are hoping solid team chemistry will help push them towards their ultimate goal of an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championship.

Basketball“We did lose a couple of key players, but the chemistry on the team seems to be a lot more positive this year, and the kids are really meshing well together,” said Mackay.

After losing a lot of size this season, the team's biggest strength will be their agility.

“We're going to be quick, and we have been doing a lot of running since day one,” Mackay said.

Some players that Mackay will rely on are returning captain Julie Yagi, Jessica Finlay and Katharine Ford, both OCAA All-stars last season, and Kristin Breen who be looked upon to fill the void in the post for the Falcons.

Leading the recruiting class for Fanshawe is Meghan McPeak. Mackay said McPeak will not start right away, but will be counted on the contribute quality minutes this season.

Fanshawe will face stiff competition from Toronto area schools in the East division Humber, Seneca, and Durham, however Mackay said she expects the Falcons to be the top team in the OCAA West division.

Fanshawe will host the University of Western Ontario in a battle of London, on October 21st in a 6:00 p.m. exhibition contest, and will begin their regular season the following night when they host the Redeemer Royals at 4:00 p.m.
