Over Her Dead Body

With a plot that involves psychics, ghosts and every romantic comedy cliché in the book, it's not a huge surprise that Over Her Dead Body rates high on a cheesy movie scale.

Devastated when his fiancée Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) is killed on their wedding day, Henry (Paul Rudd) reluctantly agrees to consult a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) at the urging of his sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane).

Despite his skepticism over her psychic abilities, Henry finds himself falling hard for Ashley, and vice versa. But there is a big snag. Ashley is being haunted by Kate's ghost, who considers it her heavenly duty to break up Henry and Ashley's fledgling romance, if it is the last thing she does on this earthly plane...

Regrettably, Over Her Dead Body is a film oblivious to the demands of both logic and romance. Although a romantic comedy, more effort is put into lowbrow ‘humour.' Put simply, it delivers exactly what is expected -- a completely predictable, spectacularly unspecial movie. Mind you...this does not mean it is all bad, just formulaic and corny.

Furthermore, the premise of the story is nothing new or exciting; basically a man meets a woman (after fatally losing his ex-girlfriend) and falls madly in love with her. However, there is some miscommunication and sadly they break up. Soon enough, the guy realizes he has made a huge mistake and attempts to salvage the relationship, both man and woman reconcile and true love prevails. Of course, as the title of the pic suggests the story also involves ghosts, psychics, as well as an exorcism.

Overall, this is a directorial debut for Jeff Lowell (John Tucker Must Die) and thus could have gone much worse... and, perhaps, a lot better, if there was a little more effort. It is also evident that the cast, although consisting of highly talented actors, struggle with some borderline-bungling direction and thus delivers rather bland and frail performances.

Nonetheless, Lake Bell is remarkably wonderful to watch, she exudes charisma and is a breath of fresh air, performance wise as well as looks.

This movie fails to deliver and may feel like a waste of time and money for some viewers. So in order to avoid leaving the theatre annoyed, disappointed, and somewhat ‘insulted,' think twice before forking out money on this flick.
