30 hours to stop hunger

Ever wondered what it would be like to live in a third world country and not know where your next meal is coming from?

A group of Fanshawe students are hosting a 30-Hour Famine in the hopes of not only raising money, but awareness. And though it's only a very small step in another's shoes, it's a step in the right direction.

“We raised just over $1,500 last year,” said SAC member Aysha Dawood, who is also one of the event's organizers. “And we had about 40 people participate. Realistically we're aiming for 60-75 people this time.”

The event, which raises funds for World Vision, will take place on campus starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4 and run through midnight on the Saturday.

“You don't have to stay on campus,” explained Dawood. “But we have an on-campus part from 6 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Saturday. We just try to keep you busy, keep your mind off of food and provide beverages. We've got a couple of things planned out, we've got a scavenger hunt around London, we've got movies, Rock Star, Guitar Hero, karaoke and we're trying to get Dance Dance Revolution.

“We're also going to have an acoustic music area set up so people can jam, and the gym so people can play basketball or ping pong, because that was really popular last year.”

Students who are interested in participating can get more information at the Student Union office or through the groups page on Facebook called “30 Hour Famine - Fanshawe '08.” Registation begins March 4 at the FSU front desk and students who pre-register by March 20, and raise a minimum of $10 will also receive a special kit, which includes a 30-Hour Famine t-shirt.

Raise over $50 and your name gets put into a draw for a special grand prize.
