Spring is finally in bloom for fashion

Florals are in fro Spring and Summer, but the trend is not reminiscent of your great aunt

April showers bring May flowers...

One of the most popular trends bursting into bloom on spring 2008 runways is lush, painterly flowers. Whether it is daisies, roses, lilacs or hydrangeas, chic floral frocks in vivid hues is your seed to looking fresh this spring. Think secret garden romanticisms, long flowing dresses, loose cuts and flexible fabrics. Popular details seen on garments this season consist of pleats, puff sleeves, ruffles, bows and pintucks.

My favourite designer's take on florals was Stella McCartney's Spring 2008 Ready-To-Wear collection. Her line had an easy-going 1970s vibe, with her wildflower scattered prints. Along with the use of soft coloured prints, McCartney's use of delicate ruffles, cinched waistline lines and drapeable fabric made her line ultra feminine. Her happy, playful and girly signature is portrayed at its finest this Spring.

If you didn't think McCartney could be any more down to earth with her designs, think again. Aside from her Spring/Summer line, she recently launched an environmentally friendly line comprising of 18 styles, each made from recycled fabrics and trims from her previous collections. Her efforts were to avoid extra landfill wastage and transport pollution.

“Why shouldn't it be possible to adopt a more natural, organic lifestyle without forgoing luxury?” McCartney said. “I believe it's possible to have all these things without compromising your personal beliefs and the safety of the environment.”

Maybe you're hesitant to adorn yourself in floral prints at the thought of being mistaken for your great aunt? Don't fret; try integrating this trend into your wardrobe by wearing one floral printed piece to revamp an otherwise subdued, past-season outfit. Here's how to get the look without breaking the bank.

I suggest a chic, rose print silk scarf with tonal fringe from Urban Outfitters ($24). This scarf can be worn draped around the neck, tied around a handbag or even as a headscarf. A bright floral tote with a matching case, from Gap is the perfect accessory to add some casual elegance to your springtime wardrobe. A pair of Satin Flats from Aldo ($ 40) is available in black and champagne colour, embellished with colourful blossoms. They're sure to put a little spring into your step.

One of my other favourite takes on florals is the traditional Mexican embroidered dress from Old Navy ($34.50). The delicate embroidery creates an undeniably fresh look, sure to put roses in your cheeks. The breezy cotton fabric makes this dress perfect for a sunny walk in the park.

Whether you choose bold and bright hues or decide on earthy neutrals, this seasons prints are sure to add some playful femininity to any outfit. Go ahead; unleash your inner flower power.
