Financial Aid changes ID requirements

Student cards are no longer an acceptable form of identification

Students heading to financial aid this summer will no longer be able to use their student ID as a form of identification.

“We have no say in this whatsoever,” said Mary Stewart, the manager of the financial aid department. “We're still trying to fine tune it- but the ministry has made these changes as a safety precaution.”

Prior to the ministry-initiated changes, students were able to go to financial aid with their SIN cards and college student cards, but the new changes should help to crack down on identity theft amongst the student population.

“We now need to see a piece of valid government ID,” Stewart continued. “So that includes drivers licenses- though they can't be expired- but you can also use age of majority cards, passports, the firearm licenses and military ID.”

Stewart stressed though, that the specifics haven't been nailed down. So while they're accepting those forms of government photo ID come the May 1, 2008 deadline, the guidelines may still change. In which case students should ideally call the financial office before coming in to ensure that they bring the correct form of identification.

“The ministry will be inspecting us on this,” Stewart explained. “So after May 1 we won't be able to deviate from that at all.”
