A group of Fanshawe students spent an afternoon earlier this month taking part in a cleanup along Oxford St. in front of the college.

The students, part of the college's Rotaract Club, spent several hours on April 5 cleaning the portion of Oxford between Highbury Ave. and Fanshawe Blvd. as part of the city's Adopt-a-Street program.

“It's a fairly new thing here,” said Selena Flood, the club's vice-president. “They [the college] were approaching clubs on campus to get them to help, and join the program. We tried to do it last year, but it snowed before we could get it all organized.”

The turnout, according to Flood, was pretty good considering the time of the year.

“It was touch-and-go there for a while,” she explained. “With exams and everything, only 10 people confirmed that they'd be coming on Facebook, so I wasn't sure how many would actually show up. But they did.”

And the results of only a couple hours of work were visible along that stretch of Oxford St., most especially in the park near Highbury.

“I hope it's going to be an ongoing thing,” Flood said. “We'll hopefully get out at least twice a year to do a little bit of the cleanup.”
