Elie and Costello a class act on the soccer field

Two players's stood out heads and shoulders over the competition this season, literally.

Melissa Elie, and Emily Costello were the two most integral reasons why the Fanshawe women's soccer team enjoyed so much success this season. The team's two leading scorers brought more then just goals to the team; they brought leadership and very strong work ethics.

“They are our twin towers, both scoring goals, and both really key to our team,” said head coach Eva Havaris.

Competing in her first season at the collegiate level, Melissa Elie burst onto the scene, and proved to be one the leading offensive threats in the entire Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA).

“She's been a big factor on offence, and she really sets the tone,” said Costello on her rookie teamate.

“She plays very hard and is a natural goal scorer, so she's definitely a big key for us.”

Already with six goals on the year, Elie has felt some pressure to carry the Falcons offensively.

“I've felt a little bit of pressure to take it upon myself and put the ball in the net,” said Elie.

Surprisingly helping Elie this season in terms on Fanshawe goal scoring has been Costello, who is the teams middle defender, and not know for her offensive prowess. Not only has Costello anchored the smothering Falcon defence, she has also contributed four goals on the year.

“She's a solid player, and is vital to the team,” said Elie of her teamate. “She scores goals, and is my main target when I do corner kicks.”

Costello said she feels a responsibility to the team and has assumed a leadership role for the squad.

“I try to stay positive, but it really just came naturally,” said Costello on her leadership.

Elie and Costello will lead the Falcons into the OCAA quarterfinals at a time and location yet to be determined.
