Playing squash is a great workout and possibly addictive

One of the somewhat secretive gems of the Fanshawe Fitness Centre are its squash courts.

I can truly say that they are some of the best in London and many of our members can attest to this. As part of the athletic fee that students pay in their tuition, students are entitled to play squash for free. Racket sports have garnered a dramatic increase in popularity over the last few years. I for one was never a racket guy myself, but let's just say I've gotten into the sport in the past few years and have recently invested $100 in racket. Yah, it's that fun, believe me.

One of the main keys to keeping racket sports exciting is to find someone who is of similar level to you. Beating down on someone who isn't very good isn't much fun. Getting crushed by a squash god isn't very encouraging either.

Playing a friend of similar ability maintains a solid rallying experience, while keeping it fun and competitive. It also provides a great alternative for cardio exercise from the monotonous treadmill.

Students can play by bringing their student cards to the front desk of the J Building. We'll set you up on a first come first serve basis for 45 minute time slots. However, if there isn't a wait for players looking to get on a court, feel free to play as long as you like. Players need to provide their own rackets, as we don't have any loaners. We do have balls for purchase if need be, and we also provide goggle protection as it is mandatory at Fanshawe. Many sports stores carry inexpensive rackets for those looking to get involved.

Best of all, we run squash leagues throughout the year followed by semester end tournaments. We categorize matches based on player levels ranging from beginner, intermediate and advanced.

The fall squash league runs from September 22 to October 20. Games are held on Mondays between 5 and 9pm to accommodate school schedules. The registration deadline is September 18, and the fee is $10 which covers the semester end tournament food and prizes.

We are also hosting a squash clinic on Monday, September 15 from 5:30 — 7pm for those looking to improve their game. Sign ups can be done in J Building at fitness 101.

If you have any other questions regarding any of our squash services, feel free to pay us a visit at the Fitness Centre front desk. Just don't blame me if you get addicted.
