Fun and Fitness: Weather - Enjoy it while it's good

I don't know if any of you guys noticed but this summer was absolutely terrible. When I say terrible, I'm referring to the weather.

The Southwestern Ontario region was plagued with non-stop rain. It was like it turned into London, England where rainy days are constant. If you did take notice, than you've definitely noticed that the majority of mid- August to mid September has been phenomenal.

Nights are getting colder, as they typically do around this time of year, but daytime has been blessing us with some serious sunshine. The months of September and October are what I like to call the last chance for outdoors. It's the last chance to get out the roller blades, tennis rackets, bikes, Frisbees, footballs and any other leisurely toys that tickle your fancy.

September in specific is the better month of the two because the school work load normally isn't intense yet. Not to mention, it's clearly the warmer of the two months and the leaves haven't started hitting the ground yet.

As I mentioned a couple weeks ago, our Outdoor Intramural Program is an excellent way to put this in motion. Touch football and 3-pitch baseball have always been very popular among the students. Best of all, both sports are co-ed which leaves no excuse for any girls to be left out.

On a fitness related note, there is no denying that the gym can get stale at times. You may often feel like you're rehashing the same routine, in the same fitness centre, with the same faces time after time. However, getting your bike out for example provides many opportunities to mix things up. Not only are you doing something completely different from the typical fitness centre oriented agenda, you're doing it AWAY from all the monotony.

You have the entire city of London at your disposal to locate new trails and locations of interest. If you aren't familiar with the city, just ask someone who is and you'll be amazed at what it has to offer.

I don't need to remind anyone that this is Canada, and it's going to get damn cold and snowy sooner than most of us would like it. So get out there and squeeze in whatever outdoor activity you can before it's too late. If you don't, there is still a bright side; you'll be able to pick up snowboarding soon enough.
