RE: “Death toll in Gaza has surpassed 1,000” by Darius Mirshahi. Volume 41, Issue No.18 January 19, 2009

The Fanshawe College Social Justice Club needs to get their facts correct before writing inflammatory articles against Israel.

Although war of any kind cannot be condoned, Israel, like Canada and the US, does have the right to defend itself. What would be the response of any western country if a terrorist organization started attacking schools and innocent citizens with thousands of rockets? Israel has shown tremendous restraint over the past eight years despite the constant barrage of missiles and rockets fired at her people.

White phosphorus and other fireworks have been used by Israeli Defense Forces to light up the night sky so that it may better target terrorists and the source of missile launchers so they could protect and avoid civilians that may get caught in the cross-fire if not properly seen. It is not meant as an incendiary and is intended to burn up before it reaches the ground or is used on the ground as smoke-screens.

Many of the “Humanitarian Aid Ships” over the years have hidden explosives and other weapons to supply terrorists in Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces routinely inspect these ships to ensure that they are in fact carrying humanitarian aid and not weapons.

Hamas has tortured and murdered its political rivals, used children as human shields, hidden in mosques and homes of peace loving residents, manufactured humanitarian crises and violated the rights of their own people. Israel has ensured that humanitarian aid continues arriving in Gaza and hundreds of Gaza inhabitants have received medical care in Israel before and during the current conflict. Over 100 truckloads laden with tons of food, medicine, and other goods have been transported into Gaza since Operation Lead Cast began. Israel has now called a unilateral truce in hopes the Hamas will follow.
