Why be you when you can be me?

No, I'm NOT that conceited, I just like saying that. But it's almost “tradition” that every year at election time around here, only ONE person runs for VP of Athletics. It comes down to a ‘yes' or ‘no' vote, and the campaigns that are run, they're really not all that good. I'll admit, I stuck to posters and “word of mouth”, but really, I could have done so much better. So this is my chance to give my input and hopefully make it so that this year, your upcoming VP of Athletics does more than Photoshop their face on a basketball that says “helping anyway she can.”

So a little about me, so you get where I came from and what got me where I am today. In high school, I never got interested in the student union. All I remember was randoms making super nervous speeches over the intercom. I played sports, but that didn't carry over into college because I was all nervous and shy. I ran in the SAC elections my first year to be the Health Science rep, and I lost. Then, I heard about the VP position and debated it for a couple weeks. I even called Mom for advice, she gave me the whole “do what's best” speech. Thanks Mom. So I came up to the office, got the 25 signatures that I needed, and even then, I held off handing it in because I wasn't fully sure. But in the end, I said why not?

After some speeches in Forwell, and waiting for the votes to be all tallied, I found myself employed. And honestly, no regrets. The people that I work with, the other executives, the full time staff, the people in Athletics, the dance team, all the people from OBS and Oasis, all incredible. There are so many people around here that know what to do in every situation, professional or personal, so it's really not hard to love them.

Conferences. I used to think that they would be brutal, boring little lectures about lame things. But hey, turns out, they're interesting, interactive and totally useful and applicable. We get to meet with student unions from other colleges, which has been perfect for networking.

Budgets. I've never looked at a budget before, well, I've never understood a budget before. I failed grade 10 math. And now I have meetings about budgets and even help decide the athletic fee for next year.

Just overall, this has been an awesome experience. The things I've done, the people I met, the places I've gone, it was worth it. But I “earned” this by having people vote yes or no. It would be MUCH better if two people stepped up, created some sort of “competition” for the spot, so that you can at least choose between two people. If you want to run, or just want more information before you call your mom and ask for advice, come up to the offices, fill out the paper work, you can even sit down with me or someone to talk about what you want to do. Just do what's best.
