CSA Update: Calling attention to colleges

As you may already know, the federal government is investing $2 billion dollars in repairs to post secondary institutions all across Canada, providing colleges with 30 per cent and universities with 70 per cent of the allocated funds.

I have received word from the CSA that “the Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) has projected that Ontario's colleges currently have over $1.035 billion in ready-to-go infrastructure projects. But without the necessary funds both from the federal and provincial governments, Ontario colleges will not have the resources to expand capacity for growing enrolment as well as to fix our crumbling infrastructure.”

As a result, each member campus of the CSA, including Fanshawe Student Union, is faxing their own personalized letter to their Members Provincial Parliament. Our MPP's are Khalil Ramal, Deb Matthews, Chris Bentley, Ernie Hardeman and Steve Peters.

We are faxing this letter to get all of the MPPs paying attention to the lack of fairness to colleges. Our strength is in numbers, and if every member campus of the CSA faxes letters of disapproval toward the 70-30 split, we may influence last minute changes to the 2009 budget. We are trying to show the provincial government and all MPPs that college students are united on issues that affect us as a whole.

This idea was thought of by the CSA;

“This is our opportunity to show the McGuinty government and all Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) that colleges and college graduates deserve better then the traditional 70/30 or 1/3 split in funding.”

If urging the key decision makers in the 2009 federal budget to show leadership and fairness when it comes to investments in your learning environment and your future, do not hesitate to fax or email our Members of Provincial Parliament.

As always, I am interested in hearing your opinion feel free to email me any of your questions or concerns.
