Letter to the Editor: More cash for clubs

Is $300.00 really enough?

Thinking of starting a club at Fanshawe College? Well $300 would be your annual budget. This may seem like a lot, but not if your club has a size of 20 or 50 members. That works out to being $30 a member if the club has 20 members, or better yet $6 a member if the club is to have 50 members, and that's for the whole year.

For a club that basis it's functions on bringing guest speakers and promoting awareness to some of today's most controversial issues, it really becomes hard to accomplish these programs with a staggering $300 budget. As tuition increases year after year for students, the budget continues to remain at $300 for clubs.

This is unfortunate for a school of Fanshawe College's size and where the administration strives to be number one amongst Ontario Colleges.

According to Stephanie Turcotte, Director of Clubs and Associations at Cambrian College, clubs at Cambrian do not receive a specific amount instead they are dealt on a case by case basis. Depending on the amount the club is requesting on the first instance will determine if they are eligible to request more funding again.

For example, if a club asks for $2,000 for club jackets then that is all they get! But if a club only asks for $200 to cover the cost of a bus then they are still eligible to request more funding.

Like Cambrian, Sheridan College also provides additional funding for clubs.

According to Crystal Bennet, Director of clubs and associations at Sheridan, the additional funding is based on a needs basis and can range anywhere from $100 to $500 on top of their annual budget.

This kind of funding needs to be applied closer to home, so that our clubs here at Fanshawe College are able to be more effective. Whether it works out to be $20 a member or $6 a member regardless let's high ball it and use $30 a member this still works out being only about one per cent of your years tuition. This may not be of concern for many, but it certainly is for those that are apart of these many clubs, so as students let's help our student mates and bring awareness to this issue.
