Shinerama: No chump change for charity

This year's Shinerama campaign came through with an impressive $7200.95 for Cystic Fibrosis.

While they fell short of their goal of $10,000 it was still a great year for fundraising even with the current economic situation, said Kevin Mckay, Vice-President Internal Affairs for the Fanshawe Student Union.

“A lot more students (were) enthusiastic about volunteering, but not as many donating,” he said.

In addition to the annual Shinerama pub that took place during O-Week, the campaign hosted a pancake breakfast, BBQs and went into the community for Shinerama Day, all in the name of raising funds to find a cure.

Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that creates excess mucus in the respiratory system, causing shortness of breath, among other problems. In the past, children with CF wouldn't even make it to their teenage years. Now they are expected to live up to 36 years old.

This kind of progress is made possible because of research funded by money raised from Shinerama Day events.

During O-Week, Mckay was able to experience how the Shinerama campaign really does affect those with the disease.

“I was approached by a student with CF, complimenting me on my work,” he said. “It was cool.”
