Greendrinks: An eco-friendly happy hour

It's not easy being green in a world where sometimes you feel like the only one who knows their three Rs.

Enter Greendrinks — a community of people who get together every month to discuss eco-conscious living, “strengthen efforts and create more change,” said Greendrinks London director, Tiffany Roschkow.

“Anyone who starts to get interested in the environment, you can get really disillusioned,” said Roschkow. “One cool thing about Greendrinks is it's about people getting together and having fun.”

Greendrinks now exists in 598 cities all over the world. London's group is a little different than the rest. Rather than just meeting over drinks, the group added something extra.

When it originally began, it wasn't getting much attendance. So the idea to have a speakers' series and organize field trips was developed and more people started taking interest in the green social events. Eventually, Greendrinks became a communication hub in the city for environmental issues, said Roschkow.

For those interested in being a part of the group, not only is it a great way to meet people with similar interests, it's perfect for networking, said Roschkow. Any horticulture or environmental technology programs could benefit from being a part of Greendrinks because it puts you in contact with industry leaders and potential colleagues, she added.

Besides all that it won't cost you anything.

“(We) make sure all of our events are free so it's accessible to all incomes,” said Roschkow.

If saving money's not enough to entice you, the meetings will make you feel more hopeful for change, said Roschkow.

“You leave, and you feel empowered, and (like) you do matter.”

Currently, Greendrinks is in the process of developing Ecoliving London, which will be the go-to group for information on eco-friendly baby toys to backyard composting. Meanwhile, Greendrinks will resume its role as being a way for the green-minded to get together.
