Intramurals easy, fit and fun

Getting physically active at Fanshawe doesn't mean you have to play on a varsity team. You don't even have to sign up for a gym membership if that isn't your cup of tea. There are many students looking for some simple extra curricular ways of getting sporty. For those of you who fall into this category, intramurals is what you should be considering.

The fall semester will have a variety of intramural sports that should satisfy all sports enthusiasts. The list includes co-ed 3 pitch baseball, 5 on 5 basketball, co-ed touch football, men's and women's ice hockey, and men's and women's volleyball. The outdoor sports tend to start a little earlier to ensure warmer weather. The biggest challenge usually comes in the form of assembling a team. First year students rarely know anyone upon starting school, so it can be a tough task organizing enough interest to gather a team up. If that's the case, the best bet is to assemble a team with your classmates. The athletics department will take your class program time table and will do their best to schedule games around your classes.

Gymnasium 3 is the official gym for all indoor intramurals. The gym floor was redone just last year as you'll notice a kick ass recreational logo of our mascot, Freddy the Falcon. This of course means you have to have indoor shoes, as we want to keep the gymnasiums in tip top shape. Winners of championship games will have their team photos taken with the respective sport trophy. You'll also get the bragging rights of having your team photo displayed in our sports wall of fame. Champions aren't the only ones to get prizes. One out of every 10 intramural participants has a chance of winning an Adidas giveaway. These include shirts, bags, and hats.

The best thing to do is stop by the athletics department in J building and grab a registration form for any sport that you are interested in. Nope, I won't tell you the due dates but what I will tell you is that a lot of the deadlines are within moments. See I've already tricked you into getting physically active by walking to the J building. If you happen to just miss a deadline and you are confident you have enough for a roster, explain your case to the athletic desk and I'm sure they can accommodate you. It's best to get as many people as you can on your teams to ensure that your team has enough players to avoid forfeiting matches. Recruiting other college friends from outside your program is another good way of ensuring this.

Intramurals are the perfect way to curb your sports hunger in between classes. There's also enough competitiveness to keep it worth while for the diehard athletes. Take a boot down to the athletic department and get familiar with what's available. Get your classmates rounded up and make sure you get involved!
