Love Happens-mindless romantic comedy

Love Happens (2009)

Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston star in this romantic-comedy about a self-help author who happens to fall in love while still grieving over the death of his wife, and an independent florist who enjoys flexing her vocabulary while vandalizing the hallways in a busy hotel. The plot of this story is extremely predictable and drawn out, though it does satisfy as a perfect “girls' night” movie with eye-candy Eckhart stealing the screen.

The acting is a little over-the-top and sappy, although a truly amazing performance was made by “Rocky” the parrot in a touching scene involving the forest surrounding Seattle. Unfortunately, the director made the mistake of casting a cockatiel instead of an actual parrot, and forgot to include a disclaimer warning people not to release their own domesticated tropical animals into a forest that is not the creature's natural habitat. Let's be honest, that's just cruel.

Jennifer Aniston plays her typical “Rachel from Friends” role as a quirky and stylish single woman who owns a flower shop and has little luck with men. Aniston either can't seem to get out of being type-cast or she just really like's playing the same character again and again. Her co-worker, a strange feminist slam-poetry author played by Judy Greer, is a good compliment to Aniston's character, although doesn't have much purpose in plot development... as lacking as the plot was.

Martin Sheen plays Eckhart's father-in-law and is a refreshingly splendid addition to the movie. His character was a pleasure to watch, yet seemed a little inconsistent, changing from “intimidating” to “touching” by the end of the movie.

Love Happens is a great movie for someone looking for a mindless romantic-comedy with touching scenes about overcoming struggles, or for someone who had two hours to kill and wants to learn a few new words to add to their vocabulary.
