Pandorum packs plenty of punch and suspense

Pandorum (2009)

Confused and apparently alone, Bower (Ben Foster) awakes from a hyper sleep. Initially unsure of his own name, he begins to investigate his surroundings, trying to remember what happened. He determines that he is part of “Flight Team Five,” and that he has been mobilized to take over flying his crew's ship that is on its way to colonize a new planet.

Payton (Dennis Quaid), his commanding officer, gains consciousness, and the two begin an effort to try and find a way out of the room in which they are trapped. Bower climbs through the ship's air ducts only to find everything dark and deserted… that is, until a mysterious group of creatures start to chase him. Similar to humans, but at the same time nothing like us, the creatures have pale skin, deformed faces, and are incredibly strong and fast due to their reliance on their primal instincts.

Bower joins up with fellow survivors, Nadia and Mahn, to search for the ship's reactor, which will hopefully restore its power, so that they can continue on their journey to the new world. In order to get to the reactor, they have to make their way down to the deepest part of the ship, where the creatures are in their greatest numbers. Because the ship will only last a little while longer before it explodes, they don't have a choice, but to make this venture. However, in the end, the creatures aren't their only threat.

Pandorum keeps the audience guessing until the very end. Scenes of suspense, an in-depth plot, along with plenty of thrills and horror made this movie well-rounded and very entertaining. More than once I found myself jumping because of something popping out, or something horrific happening.

To add to these aspects of the film, a great cast, further, made this movie enjoyable. Foster (3:10 to Yuma) was amazing. Often cast as a disturbed character (a role he is good at), it was nice to see him playing more of a heroic nice guy. Quaid (G.I Joe), a very talented actor, also portrayed a different “less normal” character than he usually does. The two main actors really did a reversal here, which could be why this movie had such an impact. Also starring Cam Gigandet (Twilight), I recommended Pandorum to anyone who enjoys thrillers with unexpected twists.

Final Words: Saw it and loved it…much more than I expected.
