Men's basketball team has nationals or bust mentality

Coming off a season that ended in utter disappointment at the OCAA basketball championships, the Fanshawe's men's basketball team looks to regain the form that led them to be one of top teams in Ontario.

Last year's Falcons team finished the regular season with a record of 14-4. The early returns on this year's squad looks like the team may in fact be more dominant, faster, with a strong offence and a stingy defence.

All the players this year have the nationals as their main focus and “anything less than the nationals is a failure” said veteran player Brandon Sewell. Since this year there are a few more rookies than returning players the team is looking to gel together and remain as “one unit” throughout the season.

Key factors for success this season will be going hard on defence with communication, crashing the boards for rebounds, and making it tough for the opponent to score. With a fast paced offence they are looking to shoot the ball more, make smart passes and run the floor well. Each player brings their own style and skill and by moving the ball around it will give each player their opportunity to produce.

The Falcons finished the exhibition season with an 80-71win over Seneca Sting. Coming out strong with man-to-man coverage to zone coverage, the Falcons defence looked strong. The players moved the ball around smoothly and wasted little time pushing the basketball up the floor. Going into half-time Fanshawe led by 16 points.

This season may very well be one to watch as the team looks well-constructed for winning.
