Two Crown King has big ideas and great sound

Two Crown King is a band.

Come to any of their shows, and you'll see a sea of shirts with that exact phrase.

Simple but very effective, especially since they've only done about seven shows and every single one has been sold out.

“It usually takes a year or so to get to that point,” said Pat Maloney, the band's drummer, adding that Two Crown King has yet to play a show that's been under 100 to 150 people.

The concise marketing phrase is just one part of the band's effectiveness. While burgeoning bands may just jump at the chance to perform without doing the proper preparation, Two Crown King is making sure they've got their total package together — that way it's easier to blow people away every time.

Founding members Adam Dick and Sean Goodchild have been writing partners for a while, said Maloney. “They've written whole albums worth of stuff.”

In the last six months, they scouted musicians for live shows and for the production of their debut album — which is being produced by Dan Weston of Black Box Music, who also worked with Classified and Attack in Black on their albums. Two Crown King's debut is tentatively scheduled to be released in 2011.

The band consists of Maloney on drums, Dick as the rapper, Goodchild also on vocals, Ajay Massey on guitar, John Yun on keyboard and Jeremy Pimentel on bass. Their sound is a mix of soul, rock and hip-hop. Each band member has been playing music for a long time, in other bands and in other countries — so with each member's different talents, they've all been able to come together with a more matured sound, said Maloney.

All this preparation gives the band a professional polish. Their shows are high energy, each member is having the best time, and their audiences love it, he said.

The band's current schedule involves two opening spots for Classified. They'll be playing at McMaster University January 29 and then they'll be back at Fanshawe for a sold-out show on February 2. Their focus is on securing spots with bigger bands that already have an established fan base, and then they can bring their own loyal audience members into the mix as well, said Maloney.

They'll also be opening for London artist Shad on February 19 at Call the Office and playing the last New Music Night at the Out Back Shack on April 23.

For those who can't wait until next year for the album — Two Crown King has that covered. You won't find stacks of EPs at their shows; they're more creative than that. Instead for $5, fans can get download cards to download four songs.

Creative ideas, great sound and a sea of branded supporters that seems to only be getting bigger.
