Viktor & Rolf making fashion waves

Viktor & Rolf's Spring/Summer 2010 ready-to-wear collection may just be the most talked about so far this season.

The risks they took have paid off because not many critics had bad things to say about the clothes. Half of the collection focused on feminine pastel lingerie and light flowing satins in the form of camis, pajamas and bed jackets. These designs were right on-trend and were the most wearable part of the collection - definitely something we will see on the streets. However, the other half of the collection was what really got people talking. To call it ready-to-wear is laughable, because the tulle ball gowns just screamed couture. The inspiration came quite literally from what is going on in our world today - the credit crunch and population having to cut back on spending.

One of the dresses from Viktor & Rolf's Spring/Summer 2010 ready-to-wear collectionViktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren had no hidden meanings and no room for misconception. The execution was simple; create gorgeous ball gowns full of romantic ruffles and layering tulles and then hack them to bits. The sharp asymmetrical cuts were sliced to perfection - frilled from the shoulder coming down in waves, peeking out from under skirts and bodices. The architecture and placement of tulle pieces was astounding and made me think of imaginary creatures, monsters or dinosaurs with a colour palette worthy of a princess living in a fairytale.

The Dutch designer duo reeled me in when I first saw one dress in particular; a floor length gown in a light vermillion tone and tight bodice with clever cheese holes cut right into the skirt of the dress.

One of the highlights of the show was the spectacular performance by Irish musician Róisín Murphy. Her electronic beats set the mood of the runway and she danced around on a pedestal wearing a gorgeous light pink tulle dress hiding her very pregnant belly. At the end of the show, she walked down the runway with Viktor and Rolf and everyone commended the three of them for a fabulous evening.

Although I do think the sliced tulle pieces may be overshadowing the rest of the collection slightly, I still believe that it is eye candy to reel in spectators and hopefully then they will see the other more wearable pieces which are sure to be a hit this coming season. This collection is one of the memorable times where I sit back, sigh, and curse myself for not thinking of it first.
