Women's hockey has medal months

January and February saw a silver and gold medal respectively for Fanshawe's women's hockey team.

Not bad for a team that doesn't have the funds to get real practice time.

The team was mainly created from girls who play intramural hockey and their practice is playing intramurals over at the University of Western Ontario.

Going into their first tournament at Lambton College — some of them hadn't even met each other yet, said Jessie Sibeon, the team's coach.

While that tournament started on a sour note — the girls lost their first game against St. Lawrence 2-0 — they made significant improvements.

“We went into the first one (tournament) with no expectations,” said forward, Jessica Doornbosch. “But we ended up winning the rest.”

After winning silver at Lambton College, the girls saw even more success at Conestoga College — partially because they felt more prepared.

“We kind of expected ourselves to do well,” said Doornbosch. “We knew our competition.”

Once again, the start of the tournament saw a 2-1 loss for Fanshawe against Conestoga in a shootout, the girls picked up speed and won the next game against St. Lawrence, then in the semi-finals against Lambton College and the finals against Humber.

“Humber was actually pretty mad we beat,” said Sibeon.

The final game saw no goals until the third period, when Fanshawe scored two to win.

Despite not having a lot of opportunity to play together, the girls have been able to skillfully mesh together as a cohesive team. With their success this year, Sibeon has been working hard to garner more funding for the team which she said has a strong possibility of happening as U.W.O. is not guaranteeing them an intramural spot next season.

Now that the season's over, the team will be looking for new recruits next school year. Those interested can contact head coach, Jessie Sibeon at jessiesib@hotmail.com.
