Celeb couture: a night at the Oscars

Red carpets are really just another name for runways. The only difference being that models are traded in for celebrities, while Petra's animated stomp is replaced by a slower and decidedly more relaxed saunter. At the risk of offending film lovers, I'm going to be honest: in a few weeks, I won't remember who won “Best Supporting Actor” or “Best Music” (to be completely honest, I already had to skim the paper this morning to refresh my memory!). The dazzling gowns and sparkling baubles that paraded down the red carpet last night, however, are tattooed onto my memory. But even if they weren't, photos of celebrities dressed in their finest will re-appear in the gossip blogs and fashion magazines alike, for months, encouraging readers to hunt down a nail salon to get that minx manicure, to wear pretty pastels, and to try that green eyeliner. With that said, who cares if you're an Oscar winner or not, as long as you've made it onto the “what's hot” list for style! Personally, I'd rather grace the elusive pages of Vogue, than have an award to sit upon my dressing room shelf any day. After much drooling, googling, and wish-list making, I've picked my favourite looks from this year's awards ceremony:

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Dries Van Noten Both actress and designer alike possess striking beauty: slightly unusual, yet stunning. Gyllenhaal's strapless, slinky column dress almost looked like right-on-trend “tye dye,” but upon closer inspection, I discovered it was actually a floral print in sapphire, sky blue, and black and white. A loose up-do and understated jewellery was the perfect match for Gyllenhaal's gown. In a word, she looked as pretty as a, well, flower.

Miley Cyrus wear a sexy boudoir style gown from Jenny Packham at the
Oscars. Cyrus' glam gown made Aimee Brothman's list of favourite looks.Miley Cyrus: Jenny Packham This sexy, boudoir-style gown may have been a bit too “grown up” for young Miley, but let's try to keep the nasty comments to a minimum. Packham, a regular favourite of mine among designers, certainly did it again with this number, and yes, Miley did the dress justice. A silk and ruffle-trimmed nude bustier topped a skimming, shimmering beaded and sequined bottom, creating a glam gown that was more than “Oscar-worthy.”

Sarah Jessica Parker: Chanel Couture Who didn't have a crush on this ensemble? Embellished (enough to create interest, but not overkill) with a few gentle pleats, and toned in the most flattering shade imaginable of champagne, made this THE perfect dress for the actress. Symmetricallybalanced with a mishmash of bangles and bare décolletage, Parker's fashion-obsessed alter-ego Carrie would have been proud.

Diane Kruger: Chanel Perhaps the reason as to why I loved this gown so much was because it combined so many elements of style that I endorse: classic black and white (cream in this case), sexy without showing too much skin (open back with a ribboned halter), ruffles, rosettes, and of course, pleats. Despite this combination of a multitude of features, the dress was anything, but overwhelming. On the contrary, it was borderline “unfussy.” Topped off with a sparkly hair pin, cocktail ring, and gorgeous soft make-up, this look whispered, not screamed, chic.

Nicole Richie: Reem Acra Intense “cat-eye” styling, paired with a dark, long and flared-sleeve beaded gown unquestionably left a bold and dramatic impression. Yes, this was by far a look that challenged my personal taste, but I truly love the way that Richie took a risk in wearing something that suited her gypsy-hippie style, yet still managed to look super glam.

Kristen Stewart: Monique Lheuillier I adore Kristen and her style, both on and off the red carpet. Having never seen the Twilight series, my impressions of the actress have solely been based upon photos and interviews outside of her vampire fame. I have come to the conclusion that she is a bit of a dishevelled tomboy; this, is why I love her.

Making a stir a few months back when she donned the red carpet in Converses (my shoe of choice since the age of six), she managed to create an equal amount of buzz for her stunning Oscar appearance, last week. Wrapped in a midnight-blue gown by Monique Lheullier, Stewart looked anything but dishevelled, oozing glamour without stepping too far outside her comfort zone. Ruched and cinched in all the right places, this strapless, sweetheart- neckline stunner proved you can dress a girl up, and take her out.
