Rebel Diaz break from the commercial

Underground hip-hop group Rebel Diaz recently made a stop in London as part of their first Canadian tour. The Centre for Social Concern brought them here to perform at King's University College alongside Salsa Desclazia; a salsa band from Montreal, and Test Their Logik; a revolutionary rap group based in Toronto and London.

Based in the South Bronx by way of Chicago, Rebel Diaz has been getting some major attention recently. From welcoming Hugo Chavez in the Bronx, to opening for Rage Against The Machine in a migrant farm workers action, they've been spreading consciousness through their music to larger crowds than ever, and gaining visibility for movements they support.

Fronted by the Afro-Boricua songstress and M.C., Lah Tere and Chilean brothers, RodStarz and G1, Rebel Diaz brings hip-hop back to it's roots of street journalism as they report on struggles from the streets of the Bronx as well as the movements in Latin America and beyond.

Their music is a blend of singing and rapping, and their lyrics are a blend of English and Spanish. Many of their tracks transition seamlessly between the two languages and they also take the time to teach the meaning of their lyrics to those who can't speak Spanish and encourage crowds to sing along once they know the content.

The Rebel Diaz show in London was an all ages event, was co-sponsored by several groups including Students United Representing Latin America, and was also a fundraiser for victims of the earthquake that recently devastated their home country; Chile.

For hip-hop heads that are sick of the same old commercial pop rap music, Rebel Diaz is a breath of fresh air. Be on the lookout for their next mixtape and try downloading a couple tracks online, you won't be disappointed.
