Rawkin: TIME returns to OBS
The second last New Music
Friday in the OBS has come and
gone with only one week left. I
was happy to see a great turnout
that week as some Fridays you can
almost hear crickets. It's always a
great night when a lot of people
come to these events. Not only is it
a better party but the bands love it
as well! I'm looking forward to the
last party of the year in the OBS so
don't disappoint me! This week we
had TIME return for a great show
and new band Arkham Dispatch
opening for them.
Who They Are: Arkham Dispatch is: Al Schupp, lead vox/guitar; Brett Patterson, backup vox/bass; James Harrison, power guitar; Justin Harrison, acoustic guitar; and Justin Shorey, drums. Schupp and Shorey are in first year MIA at Fanshawe and the band formed when they all came to Fanshawe although they had previously known each other from neighboring counties back home. This week they had a chance to redeem themselves with me after I said they were unprofessional when they didn't show up to their show at the disBand tour. I found out they were double booked that night and felt really bad and realized they should have handled it differently.
They are currently working on an EP of about six songs that hopefully will be out by Christmas 2010. They believe their sound is like if Foo Fighters and Tragically Hip had a baby. Their motto is “Rock Lives.”
How They Did: I liked the sound and they had some very interesting elements to the music. Their sound is interesting, although I'm not sure if I agree with how they see themselves. But it's definitely an alt rock kind of sound. Adding the acoustic guitar with the more standard rock setup is usually only used on certain songs or for certain effects. Gives them something extra. Check them out www.myspace.com/arkhamdispatch.
Who They Are: TIME is: Tyrone Buccione, guitar/lead vox/sax; Ryan Watson, rhythm guitar; Patrick Bon Clayton, bass; Taso Pavlou, drums/keys/back-up vox. I interviewed this band last semester when they played at the OBS and I absolutely loved them then and I can honestly say I still love them! They are a great rock ‘n' roll band. This time around I was able to get a copy of their selftitled four-song EP and I am happy to say I like every song on it. They have streaming music off their www.myspace.com/timerockandroll; along with some videos of the band doing their thing and I would encourage everyone to check out the song The Pressure.
TIME always starts out by reaching out to each other on the stage and forming a circle around the drum kit and then they start to play. I think it shows great dedication and passion for their music when they do this. They also add some flair, each in their own way — Watson with his bare-feet and enthusiasm on the stage, and Pavlou on the drums with great energy. Buccione has amazing vocals and he even played his sax this time, and Bon Clayton brought his laid back style and groove. I think they put on a wicked party this past Friday.
Being that this is coming Friday is the last New Music Friday Night, I EXPECT a HUGE turnout to support local talent and blow off some of the end of term stresses. Until next week KEEP ON RAWKIN!
