Parking rates will be increasing as of September 1, despite having remained constant for the past couple of years.

For a metered space, the current cost is $2.00 an hour, which will be bumped up to $2.25 an hour. The coin lots were $3.25 per entry and will now be $3.50. For a reserved spot, which cost $324 in orevious years, it will increase to $348 a year, and assigned reserved parking will go from $543 to $582 a year.

These new rates are due to inflation increasing the cost of operational expenses. Some of these expenses include the installation of new parking gates, an increase employee wages, lighting fees, and painting of the parking lines.

Another big expense this past year? Dealing with all the snow. “We were applying more of the salt mix than ever before,” said Marion Dietze, assistant manager of facilities operations.

There will also be more pavement replaced — last summer two lots were replaced. This summer lots four and six and the roadway by the greenhouse were repaved.

But despite all the increases, Fanshawe is still relatively lower priced than other institutions.

“We're still cheaper than Western is,” said Dietze.
