So you wanna be in a rock band?: A re-introduction's in order

Rose Cora Perry | Interrobang | Lifestyles | October 4th, 2010

Well, music industry, I thought you and I had had an amicable divorce, but it would seem that you've been rearing your ugly head once again, demanding more blood, sweat, and tears as your sick form of alimony. In other words, I thought I was done with you, and I most certainly thought I was done with my music industry advice column series. But, it would seem that now more than ever, my blatant honesty is required.

A lot has changed since the last time we've spoken. In fact, some may suggest that a reworking of this series' title is in order as I'm now an independent solo singer/songstress. But, don't let that fool you. I've been around the block for a good 10-plus years acting as my own manager, booking agent, publicist, licensor, entertainment lawyer, and, well, I guess I should also mention talent. I've played to sold-out crowds of 500,000 and have appeared as a special guest performer at some of the industry's biggest fetes, including Warped Tour, CMW, NXNE and MEANYfest NYC. I've been recruited as an expert panellist in conjunction with both the Jack Richardson Music Awards and Metalworks Music Education series. Finally, I was elected by Canadian Musician Magazine to represent the quintessential indie artist's perspective in a three month interview exposť with my opinions and insights considered just as valid as those of Greig Nori (Treble Charger/Sum41's Manager/DISband) and Steve Blair (Warner Music).

While there's no one, two, three, magical shazam recipe I can give you that will guarantee success, I am here to help you by pointing out the good, the bad and most certainly the ugly of this biz; accordingly, I welcome ANY topic suggestions you may have.

I'm NOT in the business of changing minds or crushing dreams, but I am in the business of providing you with the unapologetic and uncensored truth about how the Canadian indie music industry truly functions. For starters, there's no such thing as an overnight success.

So ... if all of this sounds like your particular brand of candy, I suggest you tune out your iPods, and tune in to what I have to say.
