Breaking Down Ward 3

Fanshawe College is located in Ward 3, the northeast corner of the city. It runs east of Highbury Avenue. and north of the CP Rail. Anyone who lives in Ward 3 — including students living in residence — can vote for the candidates listed below.

What you should know:
London school board trustee from 1982 to 1997. Neighbourhood Watch coordinator in two areas for the past 20 years. Sunday school teacher at First St. Andrews United Church. Taught at Fanshawe.

Key Issues:
- Supports a four-year tax freeze, says city hall is squandering money.
- Says the cost of doing business in London is too high — has a focus on business development.
- Wants to promote economic growth.
- Wants to develop commercial space in Ward 3.
- Wants to develop social programs in the ward, including a community centre, library and pool.

What you should know:
Teaches English as a second language at Fanshawe. Founded Makropolys magazine in 2007, which focuses on multicultural communities, is currently editor-in-chief of the online version. Received a certificate of recognition from the Minister of Immigration of Ontario in 2007 for his work in support of immigrants.

Key issues:
- Recognizes the issue of the financial crisis in the area. Believes best solution would be the immediate creation of a emergency consultation team. (which would include individuals who have lost their jobs in Ward 3, industry and commerce analysts, banking and financial corporations, small businesses, municipal, provincial and federal representatives.)

- Says tax increases can be controlled if the city expands its tax base. Does not believe homeowners should subsidize local industry, but instead make them partners.

- Wants to encourage industry by finding more innovative uses for London's resources.

- Believes the college and its students are vital to the community, and the students have not been recognized as citizens. Believes just patrolling the trouble spots is "another way of not listening to the voices of the people with a spirit of creativity."

Founder of, and community advocate for, London PCB Watch campaign to ensure the cleanup of Canada's largest PCB contaminated soil storage site (over 80,000 tonnes located in Ward 3) was completed in a safe, transparent and efficient manner.

Key Issues:
- Considering the four-year tax freeze, and views tax increases as a last resort

- Wants a renewed spirit of cooperation and selflessness at city hall.

- Wants city hall to be run more efficiently.

- Finds current unemployment levels unacceptable — wants to work with employers to stem job losses

- Wants to attract outside companies to London.

Involved in a wide variety of groups around London such as the London Dog Owners Association, the Northeast Multicultural Market, the Advisory Committee on the Environment and many more. Has been involved in municipal, provincial and federal politics for over 30 years.

Key issues:
- Concerned about public safety.

- Aims to work with Neighbourhood Watch, London Police Services and residential associations to combat vandalism, theft, destruction of property and graffiti.

- Wants to put some of the $55 million of federal gas tax funds the city will receive towards public transit instead of roads, like city hall plans to do.

- Believes better mass transit would mean fewer parking lots in the city's core

An active member in Orchestra London and the Unity Project for the Homeless. Chair of the building plans for the John Labatt Centre.

Key Issues:
- Would like to see improvements made to local infrastructure such as curbs, sidewalks, parks and other recreational areas — more investment in the betterment of neighbourhoods.

- Aims to improve the relationship between Fanshawe College and Ward 3, while also looking at ways to decrease property damage.

- Encourage industrial, business and airport growth by continuing to support it.

- Part of his vision for London includes turning London into a city with more job opportunities, reaching out to citizens through social media and developing a "jobs first" campaign which would include a tax policy and incentives to "hire one more."

- Wants longer term budgeting and planning in city hall.

- Wants to maintain or reduce taxes by managing money more carefully and curbing city hall's out of control spending.

- Wants North London to get a fair share of resources, attention, investment and improvements

- Wants to improve health care and attract more doctors to the city

OPEN FORUM FOR WARD 3

The FSU is holding an open forum for the Ward 3 candidates on Wednesday, October 20 from 12 to 1 p.m. The forum will take place in the Student Centre building on the second- floor Alumni Lounge. Each candidate will have 2 minutes to explain their platform, and a Q & A session will follow. Free pizza for all who attend.
