Fun and Fitness: Success comes from hard work

Training is 40 per cent physical and 60 per cent mental. Hell, I'd go as far as saying its even 70 to 80 per cent mental. There is no exact mathematical answer, but many fitness enthusiasts would agree.

When you take a good look at physical fitness drop out numbers, most people drop training within the first several weeks. The first few weeks are the most taxing on the body and many people attribute their loss of desire to this specific reason. The reality is that they've lost the physiological battle it takes to progress. As fun as it is to get into something new, the beginning phase often sucks. Nobody really likes being a poor performer at something, but the ones that love a challenge are the ones that inevitably succeed at life.

Let's take Arnold Schwarzenegger for example. He is arguably the greatest bodybuilder of all time and is a fitness icon worldwide. The excruciating amount of work he put into his bodybuilding career paid off immensely. However, what set him apart from his competition was his overwhelming confidence and work ethic.

Early on in his career, Schwarzenegger had very small calf muscles, which many people said would hold him back. He would specifically wear shorts so that he could visualize his insignificant calves in the gym and provide himself with extra training motivation. He eventually trained his way to some of the best calves in the business.

When asked what he would do after bodybuilding, he responded with his ambitions of getting into movies and politics. He was 27 at the time and everyone laughed at him; and rightfully so, the guy has the funniest accent, and it was even worse in the 70s! Decades later, he is one of the highest grossing action movie stars of all time and is the current governor of California. The big foreigner with the funny accent definitely got the last laugh.

Progressing in your own physical fitness takes a winning mentality. A winning mentality also transcends physical fitness and naturally gets adopted into all facets of your life. Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and Roger Federer are the best at their respective sports and many other personal aspirations for this very reason. Physically, there have been many other athletes who are more gifted than these superstars; however, it's their unmatched drive, self-confidence and winning mentality that sets them apart from the rest.

All of you are well aware of the benefits of maintaining and improving physical fitness, so we won't go down that road again. But next time you want to quit, honestly ask yourself why. Public speaking, career building and raising a family are just a few of the things on the horizon for most of us. Life does not get any easier from here on out. So make it easier for yourself and build a winning mentality.
