Healthy Fit: You are what you eat

"Tell me what you eat and I'll tell you what you are" is a slogan that came to us through a tortuous route dating back as early as the 1800s. The phrase simply means that in order to be fit and healthy you need to eat good food.

Modern television shows have picked up the concept and used it to challenge individuals by confronting their health problems and teaching them about better food choices. Published books have also contributed to the phrase by teaching people about how to make informed decisions that could change their life.

Many students on campus thrive on the fatty indulgences catered to them around the school. This motivates them to make poor food choices as healthy food options are limited. In addition, students have classes that take place in different buildings across campus, causing them to rush from one class to the next. Due to this, they tend to target foods that are quick to prepare and consume. The last thing they want to do is stop by a food joint that prepares a full meal as they wait.

Observing eating habits can reveal interesting information about a person's self-perception. When a student constantly eats junk food for lunch, it indicates a lack of self-reflection from a health standpoint. When you eat junk all the time, you become the junk.

The amount of fats and calories build up and, with lack of exercise, foster a slow metabolism. The purpose of fast food is to sate hunger in as short amount of time as possible. Any ingredient that does the job is added to the recipe.

Studies indicate that a diet high in fat, sugar and salt leads to weight gain and increases the risk of obesity. Moreover, health expert Gillian Keith has documented that a poor diet leads to fatigue, low self-esteem and poor mental and physical performance.

Conversely, students who prepare healthy meals from home demonstrate some of control and responsibility. These students make healthier food choices and, in turn, appear to be healthy and more confident. They have reduced stress, boosted vitality and thinking power, lifted their moods and given themselves a healthier heart. Therefore, when you eat good food, you are healthy.

In sum, Keith added, there are countless other benefits of eating well and it would be impossible to name them all. The message is loud and clear, healthy food choices can make you feel good and look great!
