Soccer women come up short in attempt to repeat as champs

After an incredible undefeated season, the Fanshawe Falcons women's soccer team finally met their match in a heartbreaking loss in the Ontario championship final to the Humber Hawks 3-0 on Saturday. Goaltending played a major role in the final as both starting goalies were knocked out of action during the game.

The Falcons thought they had given up an early goal when Humber's Keyla Moreno scored on Fanshawe fourth-year goaltender Sarah King, before the goal was called back on an offside ruling. King made a number of saves for the Falcons early on, before suffering an apparent head injury on Humber's opening goal by Samantha Batten. Kayla Sibbald replaced King in the Fanshawe net.

With the Falcons' starting goalie out of the game, Humber was able to add to their lead with a goal from fifth-year player Connie Tamburello to take a 2-0 lead to halftime.

King returned to start the second half for the Falcons before being knocked out of the game for good with a leg injury, after Tamburello scored another goal to all but seal Fanshawe's bitter fate. Falcons second-year forward Victoria Morelly was named player of the game, as well as a member of the all-tournament team.

Fanshawe head coach Martin Painter was humble in defeat, admitting that although his team was the underdog, all credit was given to Humber, who he thought had played a good game for a very experienced team. Painter did add that he thought his team played better in the second half and thought that if Morelly's shot that ringed off the inside of the post had gone in, the game could have turned. But at the end of the day, it was experience that made the difference.
