Women keep their heads in the game

With two regular season games under their belts, including a game against bitter rival St. Clair, the Fanshawe Falcons women's basketball team is flying out of the gate at 2-0.

With the 2-0 start, the ladies have two weeks between regular season games. They enjoyed a couple of exhibition games on the weekend, and the team went 1-1.

"It's a good start — definitely better than last year," second year player Natasha Amo said.

Assistant coach Larry Little stated, "The league start is good. Turnovers and 'in their face' defence have been keys to victories."

Little said he knows it may be a challenge to keep the girls focused during their time off. "This week is hard because of exams and other commitments. Next week will be crucial for us in order to get prepared for Sheridan."

Sheridan is the team's next opponent and their first real test of the young season. The Bruins are the defending champions, and with a team like that coming in, there are some extra strategies to go over. "We will teach the girls some new defensive styles to throw the Bruins off," Little said.

"With a team like Sheridan, we have to come ready to play," Amo said. Fanshawe is currently ranked second in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association, and if they are able to maintain that ranking they should have no problem going in to the playoffs. "Every game is a series of adjustments, we play them like an exam — if we make mistakes we find a way to fix it," said Little.

The Fanshawe team is defenceminded this year and that is why the team is off to a great start. The women's practices are up-tempo and focused on the mental aspect of the game. The team's next game is November 10 at 6 p.m. at Fanshawe against Sheridan.
