Mens' basketball team is off to a good start

The Fanshawe Falcons have the ball. They're dribbling up the court. They shoot … they score! The fans in the stands are going nuts. The claps and cheers echo through the packed gymnasium.

That was the scene during the team's recent home game against the Mohawk College Mountaineers. The Fanshawe mens' basketball team defeated Mohawk with a stunning final score of 90-67. Is this a turnaround for the Fanshawe Falcons men's varsity team?

Guard Mike Dubreuil, a child and youth worker student, said the team's excellent shooting skills are what netted them the game. He mentioned he'd like to see improvements on their rebounding for the next game.

On October 27, the Falcons played a home game against the St. Clair Saints. In a nail-biting finish, the Falcons soared to victory with a final score of 76-63. Forward Gareth Edwards, a culinary management student, stated, "I think we came out of the first half good, but the second half we let up a bit. Practice makes perfect."

Student athletes have it tough; they have to attend two-hour practices every night from Monday to Thursday, plus games at home or out of town — not to mention classes and homework. Debrevil said it's not as tough as it sounds. "It's not hard. I'm used to it."

Dubreuil said he plans on furthering his career in basketball.

Sports fans have plenty of time to watch Dubreuil play before he hits the big leagues, with two home games coming up this week. The team takes on the Sheridan Bruins on November 10 at 8 p.m., and then plays St. Clair the next night at 7 p.m. Both games should be electrifying, so come out and support your Falcons!
