Icy winds and near-freezing temperatures are nothing out of the ordinary for Canadians in the winter, but it's a different story in India. Uttar Pradesh, hit worst by India's winter blast, has seen 41 people die from the cold as of January 5. India is famous for its sweltering summers, but temperatures usually drop to around 14 degrees Celsius during December and January. The temperature dropped to just 3.7 C on January 4 in the capital city of New Delhi, reported The Toronto Star.

Last year was not a good time to fly: 2010 had more airplane crashes than 2009, the London Free Press reported. According to Ascend, an aviation information and consultancy firm based in the U.K., the death toll from air crashes jumped 13 per cent last year, from 731 crashes in 2009 to 828 in 2010. According to Ascend, 2009 was the safest year ever for the air travel industry.

Canadian health and fitness experts are easing the fitness guidelines, saying that health benefits can be accrued with less effort than the current criteria. However, they still say that more movement is always better and by altering the previous recommendations, they hope it encourages more Canadians to get active. Only 12 per cent of children and less than half of adults in Canada are meeting the current guidelines.

The biggest lotto win in Ontario has been halted by controversy. Nineteen Bell colleagues won the $50- million lottery, but on January 4, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation announced they would be delaying the payment. There are apparently discrepancies regarding who is actually in the winning group, and it has caused almost a halt in work at the Bell call centre.
