Fanshawe men's basketball shoots for the stars

The Falcons have their eyes on heading to the nationals. Palve Beric, the team's first-year forward, has ideas on how to make that happen.

Beric has a passion for sports, having played some volleyball in elementary school and soccer when he was younger.

To make it to the playoffs, Beric said, "I think we just need to play together. We don't want to get too fancy out there and complicate things. We don't want to be overconfident against other teams."

When playing any sport, players have expectations for themselves and their team. In his hopes to see some high-stakes action on the court, Beric strives to push the team to make it as far as they can. "The team is a pretty young team — there are only a couple of players who came back from last year — so making it to provincials or nationals would be pretty great."

Every sports team has at least one weakness. Beric stated, "I think overall that our defense is the weakest right now, and we just need to work on that a little more and we will succeed."

With the combination of intense practices, spending a lot of time together and Glenn Johnston's coaching, Beric said the team has improved a lot over the season. "It is very different playing with new people, but ... I think we all know each other's strengths and weaknesses so we can help each other out. As long as we play together and play smart, I definitely think we can make it to the provincials or nationals."

The Fanshawe Falcons basketball team has a 5-3 record. The next game will see the Falcons take on the Mohawk Mountaineers on Wednesday, January 19 at 8 p.m.
