Top All-Star may miss game

The NHL All-Star game captains have been named: Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings and Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Both captains will participate in the fantasy draft on January 28 in preparation for the All-Star game on Sunday. The teams will participate in a school yard draft. The question is, who will be the last pick? Early indications are Phil Kessel of the Leafs, David Backes of the Blues or Patrick Elias of the Devils. Regardless of who goes last in the draft, it will be a good weekend and fun for the fans.

The All-Star Game may be missing one of the NHL's youngest and brightest stars. Sidney Crosby, who hasn't played a game in the past couple of weeks, must play in the Penguins' final game prior to the All-Star Game in order to participate. Crosby has been sidelined with a concussion since taking a hit in the Winter Classic; however, reports are saying that Crosby should be able to play in the All-Star Game.

The NHL has seen a couple of minor trades over the last week but nothing major as of yet. With the trade deadline approaching, look for more teams to start shopping players around. The real big trades won't start for a couple of weeks, but major deals should start to break through in the coming weeks.

The three stars for last week are: third, Phoenix Coyotes' Ilya Bryzgalov; second, Boston Bruins' Patrice Bergeron; and the first star is from the Carolina Hurricanes, Jussi Jokinen.

My three predictions for the upcoming week are:
Montreal at Ottawa: A classic battle of the border of Quebec and Ontario. Look for low scoring and great goaltending.
Ottawa 3-1

Chicago in Detroit: A classic divisional match-up. These teams don't like each other. Look for the Wings to come out flying.
Detroit 5-2

Calgary at Vancouver: A North-Western division match-up. These all Canadian battle will see the Canucks come out on top and not look back.
Vancouver 6-1
