Matt White having fun as coach

The Fanshawe women's basketball team has had the same coach for the past three years, and coach Matt White is flourishing as a mentor to the team.

The women have been able to bond under their head coach and that has helped them to a 3-4 record through the first half of the season. White said he still believes he team has "a chance at playoffs." They're aiming to play in Niagara for the championship. This is the attitude that White coaches with on a regular basis.

White enjoys watching the women evolve as people and as players. One of the rookies on the team, Phyna Lim, said, "The coaching is different at this level. They push you to do your best and that's really supportive." Lim, who is fresh out of high school and enjoying her first year on the team, is having fun under White's leadership.

White's main objective is to teach the team the game of basketball and show them how to excel in the sport and life. White does this through his one-on-one teaching method and coming early to practices and staying late afterwards. If a player is struggling in one aspect of her game, White has no problem staying and helping her perfect her skills. The team said they have a lot of fun at practice with White; even if the team is struggling, he is still having fun out there.

White and the team are looking to get back on track and start winning some basketball games. He is still preparing for the playoffs, and that is still the ultimate goal for the women this year.
