Ontario to develop new credit transfer system

In five years, students will find it easier to transfer their credits between college and university with the development of Ontario's new credit transfer system.

There are currently 500 individual credit transfer agreements among colleges and universities, and over 4,000 college graduates transfer to university every year. The plan aims to create more options for students, which will help them to complete their studies sooner. The provincial government is providing colleges and universities with $73.7 million over the next five years to develop the system.

Under the new system, academic institutions will also be allotting staff and programs to further assist students in transferring their credits.

"This (decision) is coming from advocacy from students," said John Milloy, Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, referencing the College Student Alliance as a strong proponent of the system.

Fanshawe Student Union president Joe Scalia sees the new system as a step in the right direction towards accessible education.

"I'm happy that something that's been advocated for so long has finally happened. It shows advocacy is worth it," he said. He added that the system comes in preparation for a drop in high school graduates, which means academic institutions need to develop ways to encourage more attendance in the future.
