It occurred to me recently that everywhere I go I'm seeing more and more smartphones.

Originally I was under the impression that they were primarily for businesspeople, as they provide easy access to email and calendars. But I'm seeing a lot more of them around, so I figured it's about time to get one. This past weekend I purchased the iPhone 4 (which was very affordable on a three-year plan), and I can't believe how much it's already changed the way I work!

Before I get into it, I will not play into the whole Blackberry vs. iPhone wars that have been a constant conversation piece for the past few years. They essentially do the same thing, much like the Android and the Windows Phone do as well.

I guess my message this week is to look into getting whichever smartphone you think is best, because they are affordable, very functional and essentially make life a little easier. I can't count how many times I had to jump into the computer lab in T before catching a bus to quickly shoot off an email, just barely catching the bus after sending it off. Now with my smartphone, this can be done on the bus without any worry of missing my ride home. That's just one example, but I'm sure you get the idea.

The other benefit to having a smartphone is the applications (apps) that can make life much easier. They have apps for everything from personal banking to photo editing, many of which are free.

Recently the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities have created a new app, as they too have noticed how many smartphones are in the hands of students. The MTCU app is specifically for students on OSAP, and it allows students to get upto- date info on their application status. This is all part of their attempt to make OSAP process easier and more functional for students. The app is at www.ontario.ca/OSAPmobile. Check it out and add a little ease to your often-stressful life as a student.
